European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
